Blog Tour: Meet My Character

This week I have been invited to take part in a blog tour called Meet My Character, where you get to find out more about the main character in my latest book!

Thank you to Laura J. Whiskens for the invitation to take part! Laura is the author of The Hunter Collection, Danny Boy and her newest release Telling Tales. I read Danny Boy a couple months ago and couldn't put it down. What a lovely story of friendship and love. You can check out her work on Amazon by clicking here.

For this blog tour I have been asked to answer several questions about a character in my current work in progress, which I am hoping will be the book - This girls Journey.

This Girls Journey

What is the name of your character? Is he/she a fictional or a historic person?
The main character of my current work is Thea. She is fictional but I added in traits of those I admire around me.

When and where is the story set?

The story starts in a little town in Michigan and then heads south to Indiana. I am pretty sure that it will end up back in Michigan, I haven't decided on that yet.  It is set in modern times, no year is really given but it will span the course of 15 years.

What should we know about your character?
Thea is a surivor. She is headstrong. She has a lot of inner turmoil going on. She is easy to love but always seems to get her heart broken.

What is the main conflict? I.e. what 'messes' up her life?
In the beginning you find out that she learns that she is pregnant and at the age of 16. Her boyfriend doesn't want to be tied down to a baby so he decides they will "take care of it". Thea coming from a very religious family has a hard time with this. But after it is done and her family finds out what she had just done they disown her. She now has to figure out life on her own and try to forgive herself in the mean time.

What is the personal goal of the character?
Thea's personal goal is to find love, even if she is the one loving herself. She really needs to forgive herself and let go of her past.

Is there a working title for this novel, and can we read more about it?
"This Girls Journey" is the working title. I am hoping to post often on the blog some short snippets. I am hoping to have this finished and ready to go by the end of the year.

About This Girls Journey...

Thea Michaels had always been the good girl. The girl who always respected her parents, went to Church every Sunday and Wednesday, got straight A's and never did anything out of character. That is until one night when she loses her virginity to her boyfriend at a friends party and becomes pregnant at the age of 16. Her life will be flipped upside down when she is told to get an abortion by her boyfriend and then her religious family finds out.

Follow Thea through many heart breaking decisions and pain as she sets out on this new journey in life. From abortion to heartache to abusive relationships to love. It is the journey that many hope they don't have to face but some will.

Excerpt from This Girls Journey (unedited)

Feeling a little claustrophobic, she threw open the window next to her, as she sat on the lid of the toilet waiting. Five minutes seemed to take forever to determine her fate. She twisted her blond locks in between her fingers and prayed. She couldn’t believe her eyes as she sat and watched the line on the stick go from one to two.
Positive…
How could she be pregnant? She had only slipped up once. Her father was going to kill her. Growing up in the Bible belt her family, most of all her father, were strong believers in abstaining until marriage. She had that grilled into her head from the time she was old enough to understand the difference between male and female, boy and girl, mommy and daddy. She started to panic. She needed to get out of there and fast. The walls of the salmon colored bathroom felt like they were closing in on her. The hand stitched scripture above the door stated, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”. She started to hyperventilate.
Not only was her father going to kill her but so was God. How could she let this happen? She knew better. Of course she did! And it was just once with Phil. She got down on her knees and started to throw up into the bowl. Was it morning sickness or the nerves? She couldn’t tell but she knew that if she wasn’t careful her mother would hear and she would be found out.
After what seemed like an hour of heaving up her breakfast, she pulled her head back, wiped the residue off of her lips with a tissue and flushed the toilet. She was going to be late for school if she didn’t wash up really quick and head out the door. She pushed her disheveled hair back away from her face and looked in the mirror. Her mascara and eyeliner were badly smudged from the crying and puking that she now resembled the raccoon that her dad always said he was going to skin for getting into the garbage can.
She grabbed the washcloth from the shelf in the closet and wet it down. She began wiping at her face and neck, the cool cloth felt good against her feverish brow. She knew that it was only do to the panic she was feeling. She wet the cloth down again and placed it on her cheeks praying under her breath as she did.
“God, if you will still listen to me” gulp “please oh please oh please let this be wrong.”
But she knew it wasn’t wrong. She was usually on time but she had skipped her period for the last two months. She picked up the stick off of the counter and placed it back into the box. She grabbed her toothbrush, put some paste on it, and then began vigorously scrubbing away at her teeth and tongue. She hated the bad taste in her mouth and wanted to get rid of it.
Knock. Knock.
“Thea! You are going to be late for school!” Her mother yelled through the door.
Thea spit the bubbly mixture out of her mouth and looked in the mirror again.
Knock. Knock.
“Thea! Did you hear me?!!”
Thea rolled her eyes and took one last look in the mirror. She would be fine. She needed to talk to Phil, he would tell her what she should do.
Knock.Knock.
Thea swung open the door and peered out at her mother.
“I am almost ready mom. I am just finishing. I will be down in 10 minutes” She stated. She pushed the strand of hair that had slipped into her vision out of the way.
“Okay, dear. Just remember that you have chores to do when you get home, so do not be late. We don’t want to make your father upset by leaving things undone.” Thea shook her head yes, pulled back into the bathroom and shut the door behind her. She was glad that her mother hadn’t insisted on coming in to grab her wet towels like she usually did. She just went on her merry way down to start cleaning the kitchen, or whatever room she thought was dirty at the time. Thea grabbed the box with the test inside and slipped back out of the bathroom and into her room at the end of the hall. She really did need to hurry now or she would be late for Homeroom with the warden, Ms. Thorton.
She went into her closet and pulled out her uniform. Every other day she would gripe and complain about wearing a uniform but not today. She was so happy that she didn’t have to pick anything out to wear; it would have taken her forever. She pulled her long blond hair up into a messy ponytail, grabbed her backpack off of the chair by her desk and then headed downstairs.
As she was walking by the dining room her mother peeked her head out. "Have a nice day at school Thea." Then she was gone again...

Room in the Heart... MY NEW BOOK!!!

My new book is now published on Amazon!! It's been such an adventure to get this published and in the hands of the readers.

The new book follows a young woman, Lottie, who is sold as a mail order bride, by her mother, to a miner in the Colorado territory. Once she arrives in the small little mine town in the high mountains, she finds out that her betrothed is no longer there. Out of desperation she gets a job at a hotel/saloon to help out a newly widowed father of 2 young children. She is thrown many trails through out her time in the 'ville.
Should she follow her guarded heart or her stubborn head?
Will God keep His promise to her to give her the desires of her heart?
The biggest question is will the young man open his heart and allow himself to love again?

The cover is still being worked on but in the mean time here is the link to the Amazon page.

Are you a Whovian??

Okay so if you are a Whovian then you know that the 12th doctor has been announced. Peter Capaldi! Although, I admit that I am not as thrilled as I should be (was hoping for a hot hunk!),  I am excited to see how the new Doctor is going to play out.

When I was doing a little research on the new Doctor I did come across something very interesting.

Have you noticed how Arthur Darvill (who plays Rory) and Peter look a like? Very odd.... Take a look... You tell me. Do you see the similarities?

AND on a Whovian level both Rory and the character that Peter played back during the 10th doctor were Romans. Could there be a connection. Hummmmm

You can never tell with Doctor Who where their head is going.... I can't wait to see.

A little gardening... and the Gospel

I just spent the last hour and a half weeding out my garden.

What I thought were beautiful vines growing were just weeds.  Weeds that were infesting my whole little patch of land next to my house.

I was even told that they were flowers so I let them grow and grow...but no flowers appeared.

Yesterday my neighbor came over and was talking to me about the garden. When I told him what I thought they were he laughed and said that I was just growing weeds. UGH....

So today after work I got down to the nitty-gritty. Shearing away and throwing weeds in all directions.

I had a lot of time to think and go over things in my head as I cut and dug out the weeds.

It got me thinking about life and the things that "grow" up out of no where. One little sin (weed) here and another there. Then a prayer of forgiveness (my shears) and they are cut away. But if the Word (weed killer) is not applied to life then the weed will eventually grow back and dig its roots deeper and deeper. Little things creep into the mind or heart and take root and if they are not dealt with through the applying of the Word on your life the weeds will eventually take over.

A little weeding and look what I have found...
There were beautiful little flowers there the whole time and I never knew it.

It's like weeding away the bad things in life and living by the Word and all of these promises and beautiful things start to show. They were there all along... But my sins (weeds) were hiding them from the promises (beautiful flowers) that were designed for me!!

What an amazing feeling.

A lot of hard work, blisters on my hands, sores on my knees and kinks in my back (and many more hours to go) but it is totally worth it!

Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her! Luke 1:45

"STUCK"

I went to see the documentary last night called "Stuck". It's about International Adoption and the countries that are holding their children, well basically for no better word then, HOSTAGE. I will grant that sometimes it is not on purpose. When United Nations changes the requirements for International Adoption and then requires that if you (the foreign country) are going to keep allowing your children to be adopted then you have to implement all these brand new rules and you don't have the means to do it... What else do you do but take those children "hostage" and not allow the adoptions to go through.

My co-workers and I went to the movie almost dreading it due to we have had some hard times recently with some of the issues that they talk about in the movie. The PROCESS of International Adoption getting longer and sometimes it coming to a stand still.

I was moved to tears by the rawness of the film, families that were represented, the living situation of the children and just the inhumanity sometimes of leadership in the government. I wanted to shake my fist at the screen and scream "HOW DARE YOU KEEP THE CHILD!!". But that is just me and my over sensitivity. :)

I was so moved that I purchased the movie right as I walked out the door of the theater. I, also,  signed the below petition:

Conservative estimates say more than 10 million children around the world live outside a family setting, in institutions or on the street. In reality, that number may be much higher.
Adoptions into the U.S. have fallen by more than 60 percent since 2004, due in large part to a broken system filled with delays, bureaucracy, discrimination and staggering costs. In the meantime, children are suffering.

To:
The President of the United States
The U.S. Senate
The U.S. House of Representatives
Leaders of all world governments
Directors of international child welfare organizations
We believe every child has the right to a permanent loving family.
We find it intolerable that millions of children all over the world live without family care.
We embrace international adoption as a worthy and effective way to honor every child's right to a family.

We demand change NOW and call upon:

The President of the United States, Members of Congress and the Secretary of State:
- To...

- To establish the United States as an effective, proactive champion for every child's right to a permanent loving family, and
-To remove barriers to international adoption.

Leaders of all world governments and directors of international child welfare organizations:
-To prioritize the need to find permanent loving families for orphaned, abandoned and relinquished children as a basic human right, and
-To support international adoption as an appropriate and viable solution for children living outside of family care.
Sincerely,
[Your name]

Put My Big Girl Panties On....Deal With It!

So I have spent the last month and a half putting on my big girl panties one leg at a time.

I have been in my new apartment, by my self, since mid February.

Waking up, cooking breakfast, coming home to an empty home, cooking dinner, doing dishes, paying bills and taking care of business.

I have spent a couple lonely nights wondering if I did the right thing....The answer is YES! I have to learn to stand on my own two feet. It has been hard. I have had to use will power not to go hiding my head in the sand when I blow my budget on food and don't know if my gas tank is gonna need filled before my next paycheck. Or if I am going  to have enough money in my paycheck to cover all my bills and rent after having been sick and off work. But the answer is yes.

Why yes? Because I have to have faith that my needs will be supplied for. I have to stand on scripture "MY GOD SHALL SUPPLY ALL MY NEEDS..."

SOOOOO as I wake up in the morning...
"My God shall supply all my needs"
As I cook breakfast
"My God shall supply all my needs"
As I drive to work
"My God shall supply all my needs"
As I shuffle the 1000s of papers on my desk
"My God shall supply all my needs"
As I come home to an empty house
"My God shall supply all my needs"
As I cook dinner
"My God shall supply all my needs"
As I curl up in my bed at night and listen to the sounds in my house
"My God shall supply all my needs"
As I close my eyes to sleep
"My God shall supply all my needs"

Do you have your big girl panties on yet?

Adoption

Working for an adoption agency has taught me a few things.

  • There are soooooo many children looking for families.
  • There are soooooo many great families looking for children
  • I wish I could help every single one of these children find forever families.

Remember that old song you used to sing growing up in church?
"Jesus loves the little children...ALL the little children of the world...Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in his sight...Jesus loves the little children of the world!"

How hard is that for some people to remember... Jesus loves all the children!! It doesn't matter if they were born into poverty, born with a missing limb, born with a brain defect, born into a richman's house. Jesus loves them!!

Matthew 19:14 says "Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

We are told throughout the Bible that we are meant to have children. "Fill your quiver with them"; "Children are a heritage from the Lord";  "Train up a child in the way he should go".

"When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world." John 16:21

"Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven". Matthew 18:3

"See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven." Matthew 18:10

"Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers." Proverbs 17:6

And I believe that this scripture talks about adoption.
"He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. Praise the Lord!" Psalms 113:9

There are also instances of adoption through out the whole Bible.

Did you know that Mordecai adopted Esther after her parents died? It says in Esther 2:7b that "Mordecai took her as his own daughter". Esther went on to be Queen and save her people from destruction.

Moses was adopted by the Pharaoh's daughter according to Exodus 2:10. "When the child grew older, she [Moses' birthmother] took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, “I drew him out of the water.” Moses grew up to be a great leader and save his people from slavery and take them on the path to the promise land.

Do you have it in your heart, like Mordecai and the Pharaoh's daughter, to raise up another world changer? One that may not have been born of your flesh but born of your heart?
Do you have enough love for just one more child? Maybe one that has never known the love of a parent?

Adoption may just be for you.

Just remember: EVERY GOOD AND EVERY PERFECT GIFT IS FROM ABOVE, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. James 1:17
For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him. 1 Samuel 1:27
